A Policeman's Narrative of Witchcraft and Murder in Zimbabwe - Henry A Clark~Covering the 1981 farm murders near Fort Victoria, by members of the newly created Zimbabwe National Army based near that town. This is the chilling account of the beginning of the what then became commonplace in those days; the killing of white farmers by members of the ZNA on instructions from Shiri (Commander of the base), Ushewokunze (Mugabe's Health Minister) and a spirit medium, Nehanda. From researched documents and personal notes taken at the time, all the more frightening for its objectivity.

Anatomy of a Rebel: Smith of Rhodesia : A biography - Peter Joyce~"In Anatomy of a Rebel, Peter Joyce skilfully gives substance to the shadow. He writes revealingly of Smith's own ordinary origins; of the immigrant Scots family into which Smith was born and its place in early Rhodesia's rugged pioneering society; of Smith's childhood and upbringing in the backwater of a small Rhodesian mining town; of his spectacular experiences as an RAF pilot during the Second World War; of his reluctant entry into the political arena; of his swift rise to power after the collapse of Welensky's Central African empire in 1963; and of the acrimonious confrontation with Harold Wilson which led to the final break between Britain and Rhodesia. Thereafter, Anatomy of a Rebel traces the course of Ian Smith's premiership during the most critical years of his country's turbulent history - years which saw the full force of international hostility directed against the rebel state. The protracted sanctions campaign; the 'battle for the soul of Africa', terrorism and guerilla warfare; and Smith's abortive attempts to negotiate an 'honourable settlement' are all described in fluent style and with an objectivity which establishes the book as an authoritative work."

Handbook to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland - WV Brelsford~Published in 1960, this 800 page volume was at the time the definitive reference book on the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. It was the first fully comprehensive survey of the country and was, when published, unique as a source of reference. Forty five chapters cover a huge range of factual information, including climate, history, industry, natural resources, education, government in all four territories, cultural activities, sport and religion. With 82 pages of b/w photographs, twelve appendices including a chronology, list of towns, diplomatic representation and statistics. Published over forty years ago, at the height of its colonial past, sadly none of the four territories today can stand a comparison, Southern Rhodesia - Zimbabwe, least of all.

Following the shooting down on September 3, 1978 of Air Rhodesia Viscount 'Hunyani' shortly after take off from Kariba by ZIPRA terrorists, and the subsequent killing of most of the survivors, the Rhodesian government felt compelled to act, in part to raise morale among whites in Rhodesia, but also to widen international awareness of the war. Races of Africa - CG Seligman~In this fascinating work of social and cultural anthropology, Seligman examines the main ethnic and linguistic groups on the African continent. First published in 1930, this book is recognized as a small classic of its kind, and it remains the only introductory account by an eminent ethnologist of all the peoples of the African continent. Despite its relatively early date in the development of British social anthropology, it deals only to some extent with physical and language characteristics, and mainly with tribal customs and social organization. It was thoroughly revised in 1956 by a group of distinguished anthropologists headed by I. Schapera, Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

In his short thirty-seven year career he added nearly a million square miles to Britain African empire and gave his name to a country larger than England, Germany, France and the Low Countries combined - Rhodesia. Rhodesia Served the Queen: Rhodesian Forces in the Boer War 1899-1902 (Vol 1) - Col AS Hickman~Volume 1
Although the Boers (descendants of 17th century Dutch settlers in South Africa) had been granted self-government by the British in 1896, the Boers were fiercely independent, resenting the threat posed by the British Empire, an Empire which was at the time the most powerful in the world. The Boers took the offensive and the British were soon to be embroiled in a war that would have international and military repercussions. Unaccustomed and untrained to fight in the African terrain, the British military were to rely more and more upon the Rhodesian forces who were familiar with the type of territory in which the war was being fought. Colonel Hickman's narrative of the story of the part played by Rhodesian forces has been meticulously researched. His sources of information encompass archive material in various languages (French, High Dutch, German, Afrikaans), his visits and field work at Boer war locations (eg. the Western Transvaal, the Northern Cape Province, Botswana etc.), and the transcriptions of narratives from those who were involved in the battles. Colonel Hickman managed to find and interview surviving Boers, and includes their testimony in this history which the author hopes will be impartial, and invoke the atmosphere of the times. Military questions of strategy and how those in command reacted to situations are emphasised in this narrative which explores the causes of the war, its various stages, and the numerous personalities engaged in its progress and conclusion.

Rhodesiana Reprint Silver Series Vol 4 Scouting on Two Continents - FR Burnham DSO~Volume 4 of the Rhodesiana Reprint Silver Series
Few autobiographies tell so gripping a story as Frederick Russell Burnham's Scouting on Two Continents. The author was an American who, after spending his early years in the tough pioneering communities of the West, heard and obeyed the call of Africa. He had a fluent pen, a flair for the sensational and the ability to involve himself, directly and intimately, in dramatic events. Burnham writes racily of his youth and early manhood in the American outdoors, and thereafter devotes most of the book to his experiences as a Scout (and later as Lord Roberts' Chief of Scouts) in the Matabele War of 1893, the Matabele Rebellion of 1896 and in the Anglo-Boer War.

The author was one of only three men to survive the massacre of the Allan Wilson Party on the banks of the Shangani river in December 1893. During the Matabele Rebellion, which broke out three years later, he was allegedly responsible for the shooting of the M'limo (the Kalangan deity - a powerful emotional influence on the rebels), claiming afterwards that by this action he had done Rhodesians a stupendous service by exploding the myth of the cave and destroying the M'limo's power'. His part in both these incidents has been the subject of differing interpretation and lively controversy for the past eighty years.

An autobiography of a young negro from French West Africa brought up in a world of good and evil spirits.and a child of great intellectual promise, this book was recognised as a work of art when first published.
