Shadows in the Sand: A Koevoet Tracker's Story of an Insurgency War - Sisingi Kamongo & Leon Bezuidenhout
Where dust can tell time ... For the first time, a Koevoet operative's story of the bush war - and the first-ever account of the bush war by a non-white member of the South African security forces. This is the story of a Kavango tracker who served for six years with Koevoet ('Crowbar'), the elite South African Police anti-terrorist unit, during the South West African-Angolan bush war of the '80s. Most white team leaders lasted only two years; the black trackers walked the tracks for years. Sisingi Kamongo tells the story of the many firefights he was involved in; he tells of the trackers looking for the shadows on the ground, facing ambush and AP mines at every turn; he tells of the art of tracking ... where dust can tell time. Kamongo's story is supported by two accounts from renowned Koevoet team leaders, forming a powerful collection of experiences from South Africa's most successful counter-insurgency unit.

The Search for Puma 164: Operation Uric and the Assault on Mapai - Neill Jackson & Rick Van Malsen
The battle for Mapai … and the final closure ..... September 6, 1979. Into the deepening darkness of the African night, a lone Aerospatiale Puma helicopter flies resolutely northward, leaving behind the desolation of the battle for Mapai, in Mozambique's Gaza Province. Huddled in the cabin, two weary soldiers sit silently immersed in their own thoughts, contemplating their difficult duties ahead. The taller of the two, WOII Graham Enslin, CSM, Support Commando, Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI), is struggling to come to terms with the death in action that morning of his younger brother Brian. He wonders how to break the news to his parents. The other, Lt Rick van Malsen BCR, 2IC, 1 Commando, 1RLI, works through the list of names in his hand, names of the 16 men who perished with Trooper Brian Enslin when a South African Air Force Puma was shot out of the sky during the assault on the Frelimo and ZANLA stronghold at Mapai on the much-feared, so-called 'Russian Front'. It will be his job to send out the official death notices and to advise the next of kin that the bodies of the three South African airmen and 14 Rhodesian soldiers were not recovered. Both men vowed that night, each for reasons of his own, to one day return to the scene of the crash to pay proper tribute to the fallen men: the aircrew and troops of Puma 164.

1976-80: A Gunner's Reflection of Fire force Operations in Rhodesia -
Gordon 'Beaver' Shaw
This book covers the author's and other crewmen's experiences in No 7 Alouette
Squadron as helicopter Technicians/Gunners who flew numerous operational sorties
in Alouette G and K Car gunships on Fire-Force operations during the Rhodesian
Bush War. The Alouette III helicopters were extensively used within Rhodesia
as well as on external operations into Zambia, Botswana and Mocambique. Beaver
served during latter stages of the war - 1976-1980, and has the unique distinction
as being the only gunner during the bush war who is credited with a successful
Air to Air contact when he shot down a Botswana Defence Force Islander plane
during an external operation, by using the K-Car's 20mm cannon.

Viscount Down: The Complete Story of the Rhodesian Viscount told by a SAS Soldier - Keith Nell
Book
In 1978, Air Rhodesia's Viscount 'Hunyani' Flight RH 825 flying a scheduled service
between Kariba and Salisbury in 1978, was struck by a heat-seeking SAM-7 missile,
fired by a gang of Joshua Nkomo's ZIPRA terrorists, shortly after take-off. Only
eighteen out of fifty-six survived the crash - all passengers who were seated
in the rear of the aircraft. While five survivors were away from the crash scene
looking for water, a group of terrorists turned up and bayoneted, bludgeoned
and shot to death ten of the survivors. Three crash survivors who had remained
at the aircraft managed to avoid being killed by running away and hiding in the
bush. After spending the night in the bush, the eight were found the next day
and rescued by Security Forces. Six months later, Air Rhodesia Viscount 'Umniati'
was shot down by another missile - this time, all 59 perished. Author Keith Nell,
a Rhodesian SAS special forces soldier, was personally involved in locating and
eliminating the Viscount Gang responsible.

Viscount Down: The Complete Story of the Rhodesian Viscounts - DVD
DVD
This DVD presents
a visual account of Joshua Nkomo's terrorist campaign to shoot down Rhodesian
passenger aircraft with SAM 7 heat seeking missiles. It screens evidence of the
brutal occupation by his ZIPRA terrorists of rural territory belonging to black
inhabitants, and the hostile situation leading up to the Viscount disasters in
which 107 holidaymakers and crew were murdered. Included is live footage taken
at the crash site and an interview with an SAS operator who parachuted in to
find survivors, only to discover the dead bodies of 10 passengers who had been
shot and bayoneted to death. Other live interviews are with three survivors who
witnessed the carnage but managed to escape, and another features the BBC interview
with Joshua Nkomo in which he claimed responsibility. The DVD also presents live
coverage of Rhodesian retaliatory strikes into Zambia, and an interview with
the Author of the book "Viscount Down".This
well produced DVD is very powerful and extremely moving. Viewer discretion advised.

Everywhere! But at Home: My Story of the Rhodesian Corps of Engineers - Alf Herbst
Here is a book with a difference - much has been written about the very active
and high profile Rhodesian combat units such as the RLI, SAS and the Selous Scouts,
but very little on some of the army's vital supporting corps such as the Engineers.
This is the author's story as he saw it and what he went through whilst serving
with the Rhodesian Light Infantry and later, the Rhodesian Corps of Engineers,
during the escalating Rhodesian Bush War and afterwards, between 1969 and 1983.
There are no political viewpoints or discussions as to the reasons for the war,
the author simply speaks about his life and experiences.

Saturday's Soldiers: The Hunter Group - Paul Els
In 1966, forward thinking OC Gil Van Kerckhoven of the South African Irish Regiment
saw that the quality and morale of new soldiers was very low due to in-effective
training being given by the South African army at the time. He also felt that
with the up-coming threat of guerrilla type of warfare, that the coventional
warfare
mindset
of
the South African Defence Force was outdated. He created the Hunter Group in
1968 with the primary aim of providing specialist anti-guerrila training to volunteers
who wanted more training that was normally provided to National Servicemen /
Infantrymen. In June 1969, over 60 men became the first to wear the converted
and distinctive scorpion badge signifying that they had completed a minimum of
100 hours of Hunter Training. By 1970, over 700 men had been Hunter trained.
In 1974, Hunter Group was dis-banded. This book gives a brief overview of what
the Hunter Group was all about, it's key members, training content, and various
articles written at the time by Hunter Group members.

Barrel of
a Gun: Misspent Moments in Combat - Al J Venter
Al Venter has spent most of his adult life covering wars. From these
40 years has emerged his latest book which, for want of something better,
he has called Barrel of a Gun. This book covers many of Venter's
exploits, starting with his first real experience of conflict after he'd
landed in Nigeria following the Ibo-led putsch that eventually led to
the Biafran Civil War. From there he went on to cover the wars that the
Portuguese were then fighting in a desperate rear-guard series of guerrilla
conflicts to retain their African colonies in Angola, Mozambique and
Portuguese Guinea (today Guiné-Bissau). Then came Beirut, Rhodesia, the
Congo, huge dollops of the Middle East, South Africa's border wars in
Angola and the consequential overflow into Zambia, Uganda, Liberia, El
Salvador, the Balkans - where he went in twice - once with the United
States Air Force over Kosovo and afterwards with mine-clearing teams
in Croatia, Executive Outcomes (twice into Angola and once in Sierra
Leone) as well five weeks with mercenary South African helicopter pilot
Neall Ellis in the subsequent Sierra Leone war against the RUF rebels.
There he flew combat in an antiquated M-24 Russian gunship that leaked
when it rained. Since then, Al Venter spent a lot of time covering some
of South Africa's security problems, including more than a month with
para-military units active against drug elements along the Tugela River
in KwaZulu/Natal. One recent phase in South Africa involved a brief spell
in the mountains on horseback, and not the first time either. He was
attached to a mounted unit along the Angolan Border in earlier days,
not long before one of the soldiers was blown up by a Soviet TM-57 anti-tank
mine. Venter has been twice injured in combat, once when a TM-57 detonated
under his APC while with a long-range penetration group deep behind enemy
lines in Angola and another time, through his own stupidity, that destroyed
all hearing in his left ear ......

First In,
Last Out: The South African Artillery in Action 1975-1988 - Clive Wilsworth
From the 25 pounder to the devastating G5 and G6 guns - to the Valkirie
127mm multiple-rocket launcher and M5 mortar. This work covers all operations
of the Border War in which the South African gunners took part, starting
in early 1975 when a young second lieutenant was seconded to train UNITA
troops in Angola on US 4.2-inch mortars - through Operation Savannah,
the first operation, to the last rounds that were fired in June 1988
against the Cuban 80th Division in southern Angola. During this period,
the artillery grew from an under-strength troop of 17 men and two medium
guns to an artillery brigade supporting a mechanized division. It is
a story of heroism, of fear, of well-planned, successful operations and
of losses to own forces by ill-timed and inaccurate fire. It tells the
story of the 8,500 South African gunners who took part in operations
during that time. Personal accounts are merged with historical fact organized
in chronological order, highlighting the shortage of modern equipment
and the efforts to combat a well-equipped, numerically superior enemy
through innovation, application of the principles of war and sheer pluckiness.
The author served in the SADF for 25 years in various roles in Artillery.
Softback, 352 pages. 200 colour & b/w photos, maps.

Recce: A Collector's
Guide to the History of the South African Special Forces - P. Matthysen,
M. Kalkwarf & M. Huxtable
This book has been some 15 years in the making and can claim, with some
justification, to be the definitive publication on the 'Recces', unlikely
to be topped for many, many years. The South African Special Forces have
invariably been portrayed as a sinister force, used in covert operations
locally and abroad but this is pure political expediency and media propaganda.
The unit's operators are shy, humble soldiers, whose primary role is
intelligence gathering, although they will take offensive action, ruthlessly,
if necessary. Highly trained professionals in class of their own, these
elite troops have garnered for themselves an international reputation
par excellence. Book includes a comprehensive history and training methods
and a plethora of memorabilia, actual-size badges, insignia, collectibles
etc.

Corps of Signals - 3 Volumes - Walter Volker
This is the first time that the histories of most of the South African
signal regiments and other related units has been published and made
available to the general public. Together with all 3 A4 sized books (600+
pages each), this could be regarded as being the only major reference
collection on the history of army signals in South Africa. To give an
indication as to the importance and status of this reference work, the
official launch which was held in May 2010 at the Wonderboom Military
Base, was attended by Gen Georg Meiring, former C SADF & C SANDF as well
as no less than 12 other Generals (Lt Gen, Maj Gen and Brig Gen), and
about 20 Colonels - in total over 200 attended.
The 3 titles are:-
Vol 1 - Army Signals in South Africa: The Story of the South African
Corps of Signals and its antecedents.
Vol 2 - Signal Units of the South Africa Corps of Signals and Related
Services.
Vol 3 - 9C - Nine Charlie! Army Signallers in the Field: The Story

Pathfinder
Company: 44 Parachute Brigade 'The Philistines' - Graham Gillmore
The South African 44 Parachute Brigade, an independent Pathfinder unit
specially created to conduct covert unconventional warfare in SA's Border
War, was a unit of 'Foreign Legionnaires' comprising of battle hardened
veterans from the UK, USA, Australasia, Rhodesia and elsewhere, who had
just previously served in the Rhodesian Special Forces units such as
the SAS, Selous Scouts and the RLI. This book is a collection of stories
about the founding and deployment of this short-lived unit, from different
parts of the world who became welded together into a remarkable combat
unit, unsurpassed by any other South African Defence Force unit in their
positive and aggressive approach to battle.

The Rhodesia
Regiment: From Pioneer Column to Independence 1890-1980 - Alexandre Binda
While this regiment might not seem quite so glamorous as the Rhodesian
Light Infantry, the SAS or the Selous Scouts, the Rhodesia Regiment (for
some time the Royal Rhodesia Regiment) has an important history going
back to Rhodesian pioneer days. They distinguished themselves in the
Matabele War, in the Matabele and Mashona Rebellions, in the Boer War,
World War-I in German South West Africa, German East Africa, on the Western
Front in France and in Salonika. In World War-II the regiment was broken
up (because of the savages losses the Rhodesians suffered in World War-I)
and elements fought in every theater against the Germans and Japanese.
After the war the Rhodesia Regiment was reformed and by the time the
Bush War came along there were eight comprised of territorial and National
Service soldiers based in every major Rhodesian centre. While virtually
unsung they gave the terrorist infiltrators far more than they could
hand out. The book has many first hand accounts plus over 250 Contact
Reports from the bush war period. Includes Rolls of Honour (WW2 & the
Rhodesian Bush War) and citations, many unpublished photos, plus illustrations
and maps.

Blue and Old
Gold: The History of the British South Africa Police 1889–1980 - Peter
Gibbs with Hugh Phillips and Nick Russell, Illustrated by Richard Hamley
The BSAP held the honour of occupying the Right of the Line - one of
the finest police forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth. In 1889
Cecil Rhodes was granted a royal charter by Queen Victoria to settle
Mashonaland, in what was to become Southern Rhodesia. So was formed the
British South Africa Company; its regiment of troopers raised to protect
the occupying Pioneer Column dubbed the British South Africa Police,
the BSAP. From the 1893 Matabele War, the 1896 Mashona Rebellion and
the Jameson Raid, the Anglo-Boer War, through both world wars and finally
to the Rhodesian bush war of the 1960s and '70s, troopers and officers
of this fine regiment of policemen, both black and white, were proudly
to the fore, in civilian and military roles … until the disbandment of
the Force in 1980.

PK van der
Byl: An African Aristocrat - Hannes Wessels
The life and times of PK van der Byl; one of the major players in a political
drama in Rhodesia that ended with the accession to power of Robert Mugabe.
By his very nature PK was controversial and confrontational. Much can
be contested about PK van der Byl but few will dispute he was an extremely
colourful character with a devilish sense of humour. The reader will
glean new information on a highly controversial subject and emerge with
a more sympathetic understanding of what PK van der Byl and his colleagues
did and strove for. The human tragedy that has followed the removal from
power of Ian Smith and his Rhodesian Front party will almost certainly
force the reader to deal with some uncomfortable conclusions, of value
to anyone sincere about grappling with the volatile and deeply troubling
challenges that confront all Africans today.
PK van der Byl: An

Rhodesia:
Last Outpost of the British Empire 1890-1980 - Peter Baxter
This is the first complete history of Rhodesia, the country founded by
Empire Builder, Cecil John Rhodes. It tells how Rhodes' men engaged Lobengula,
the Matabele king, in lengthy negotiations while at the same time seeking
a Royal Charter and the right for white pioneers to occupy Mashonaland.
It relates Rhodesia's history right up to Lancaster House in 1979 and
the 'free and fair' elections that foisted the Marxist Robert Mugabe
and his regime on the country. Throughout this historical tapestry the
author has skilfully threaded in the many often larger-than-life personalities
who shaped Rhodesia's destiny from Cecil John Rhodes, Leander Starr Jameson,
Frank Johnson, King Lobengula, Archibald Colquhoan and many others, to
the later ones like Godfrey Huggins, Sir Edgar Whitehead, Garfield Todd,
Joshua Nkomo, Robert Mugabe Ian Smith and a host of others.

Sunday Bloody
Sunday: A Soldier’s War in Northern Ireland, Rhodesia, Mozambique and
Iraq - by Jake Harper-Ronald as told to Greg Budd
Jake Harper-Ronald wanted to be a soldier from childhood. In 1966 his
ambition was fulfilled when he was conscripted as a National Serviceman
into the Royal Rhodesia Regiment. He afterwards moved to the UK and passed
selection for the ultra tough Parachute Regiment - the famed Red Berets.
Jake was the official photographer for Britain’s elite 1-Parachute Battalion
when they deployed in Londonderry to combat an IRA-inspired ‘peace’ march.
Shots were fired at the Paras who returned fire and killed 13 marchers
- the infamous ‘Bloody Sunday’. He later joined the Rhodesian SAS and
then moved to the Selous Scouts, taking part in daring cross-border raids
into hostile territory with both units. After the Bush War he joined
the Counter-Intelligence Division of Zimbabwe’s CIO and covertly spied
for South African, US and British intelligence. He left the ZCIO to took
up a British MI6 offer to run anti-Renamo Militias in Mozambique for
them. He afterwards served two tours with a private military company
in Iraq.

Shadows in
an African Twilight - Kevin Thomas
Game Ranger, Special Force Soldier, Professional Hunter and Personal
Security Officer -This is a collection of fascinating stories about a
life of adventure spread across nearly four decades in Africa and culminating
in Iraq. Many of the stories are not for the squeamish and tell of the
aberrant behaviour of man-eating lions and killer crocodiles, stories
of courageous Rhodesian game rangers who while fighting to preserve the
wildlife of a beautiful country were also fighting against brutal terrorist
forces. The author relates some of his experiences as a pseudo counter-terrorist
operator in the elite Selous Scouts during the Rhodesian War and covers
many of his experiences as a professional hunter in the exciting world
of African safari. Having also served in the previous South African era "black
homeland" of Ciskei he offers an often humorous insight into life during
the wayward period. This exciting book of high adventure ends with a
discerning look into what it is like to work in war-torn Iraq in the
specialized field of Security Escort Teams.

Gallic Thunderbolt:
The story of René Leclézio and Lonrho Sugar - compliled by Jerry Gosnell
Lonrho Sugar Corporation, one of Africa's most successful sugar companies,
was the creation of one man, René Leclézio, Lonrho's "Gallic Thunderbolt".
From its beginning in Malawi in 1965 he made it an international force
in the sugar world by the time he retired in 1994. Lonrho Sugar was that
rarest of animals, a multinational operating exclusively in Africa which
always made profits; survived floods, droughts and coups and established
a reputation for long term commitment to the communities in which it
worked. This book is not a biography of an individual, nor is it a history
of a company. It is a collection of reminiscences written by the people
who were close to René and the story of the group he created, told by
the men and women who were there.

in the Rhodesian Army the author, Nick Tredger, joined the Department
of National Parks and Wildlife as a cadet ranger in 1978 - starting with
a posting to the remote Chizarira National Park on the shores of Lake
Kariba. He takes the reader through the last days of Rhodesia with Wankie
National Park and thence the first four years of Robert Mugabe's disastrous

We Fear Naught
but God: The story of the SA Special Forces "The Recces" - Paul Els
The story of the elite South African Special Forces ("the Recces") from
inception in the 1960s to disbandment in 1993. A unique account of one
of South Africa's premier units, masters in the art of reconnaissance
and clandestine warfare. Pro-rata, the most highly decorated unit during
the wars in Angola and Namibia / SWA. This is no gung-ho account, but
rather a loving compiled series of accounts put together by the author
who was there from the inception of this fine regiment. This is about
the "operators", the men of the Recces, their exploits in Angola, SWA/Namibia
and other southern africa territories. The original and hard-to-get,
much sought after publication has been reworked with additional information,
updates, corrections plus many new photographs.

Counter-Strike from the Sky: The
Rhodesian All-Arms Fire Force in
the War in the Bush 1974–1980 - JRT
Wood
'Fireforce' as a military concept dates from 1974 when the Rhodesian
Air Force (RhAF) acquired the French MG151 20mm cannons. Coupled with
this, the traditional counter-insurgency tactics of follow-ups, tracking
and ambushing in the Rhodesian Bush War simply weren't producing satisfactory
results. Visionary RhAF and Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI) officers thus
expanded on the idea of a 'vertical envelopment' of the enemy, with the
20mm cannon being the principle weapon of attack, mounted in an Alouette
III K-Car ('Killer car') helicopter, flown by the air force commander,
with the army commander on board directing his ground troops deployed
from troop-carrying gunship G-Cars as well as being parachuted from DC-3
Dakotas. In support would be small ground-attack aircraft and on call
would be Canberra bombers, Hawker Hunter and Vampire jets. A definitive
work on this unique concept of total airborne envelopment of a guerrilla
enemy.

19 with a Bullet: A South African Paratrooper in Angola - Granger
Korff
A fast-moving, action-packed account of Granger Korff’s two years’ service
during 1980/81 with 1 Parachute Battalion at the height of the South
African ‘bush war’ in South West Africa (Namibia) and Angola. Apart from
the ‘standard’ counter-insurgency activities of Fireforce operations,
ambushing and patrols, to contact and destroy SWAPO guerrillas, he was
involved in several massive South African Defence Force (SADF) conventional
cross-border operations, such as Protea, Daisy and Carnation, into Angola
to take on FAPLA (Angolan MPLA troops) and their Cuban and Soviet allies.

Innocent Victims: Rescuing the Stranded Animals of Zimbabwe's
Farm Invasions - Catherine Buckle
Innocent Victims is the story of how Meryl Harrison rescued thousands
of animals caught up in five years of the Zimbabwean land invasions,
as farmers and families were forced from their homes to make way for
Mugabe's 'war veterans'. Many had to leave their animals behind, and
it was Meryl's mission on behalf of the under-funded ZNSPCA, to go into
these destroyed farmsteads to rescue countless domestic animals and wounded
livestock. All of the stories in the book are first hand accounts taken
from Meryl's personal diaries. Some of the rescues are gruesome and heartbreaking
but others tell of great courage, ingenuity and joyous reunions. Meryl's
mission was not about people or human rights but about animals and their
welfare and there was no room for race, politics or prejudice.

My Mothers
Kitchen was a Baobab: The Story of a Rhodesian Family - Ben Bezuidenhout
Not exactly a new book - already in its 3rd printing, 8000 copies sold.
An autobiographical romance. Ben Bezuidenhout expresses with affection
and deep love, the natural and human environment in which he grew up
.... a narrative of courage and struggle, its ambience one of man's interaction
with people and nature. Living in Southern Rhodesia, Ben's family found
themselves functioning as pioneers ... farms needed development, roads
had to be built, water systems established, medical facilities made available,
education offered to as many as possible and the essential infrastructure
of a modern state provided for all. This adventure works itself through
the anecdotal reminiscence of memory. It is laced with humour, acute
observation and entertaining appreciation of characters whose work-ethic
became second nature.

A Brick and
a Tickey High - Ben Bezuidenhout
The overwhelming success of My Mother's Kitchen was a Baobab,
prompted A Brick and a Tickey High. The stories centre around
the author's grandfather in the land across the Limpopo River. This is
another autobiographical romance and the stories are all factual, with
the book going back in time to a wilder and freer age. The campfire was
the traditional meeting place in the evenings after a day's work. Many
were the occasions the author, then a lad “a brick and a tickey high,” would
sit with the old man round the fire and listen to these stories. Through
the ensuing years there was this desire by the author to record these
events of a time and an age that now no longer exists..…

Really Inside
BOSS: A Tale of South Africa's late Intelligence Service - PC Swanepoel
Petrus Cornelius "Piet" Swanepoel, a full time member with 32 years service,
describes the origins of South Africa's National Intelligence services,
the mystery surrounding the financing of the first attempts to launch
an armed struggle against the National Party government, the controversial
accounts of the Smit murders and the assassination of Dr Verwoerd, the
role played by the CIA in the battle against apartheid and numerous other
subjects. This book was initially written to counter and clarify some
the things that James Sanders wrote in his 2006 book - Apartheid's
Friends - The Rise and Fall of South Africa's Secret Service, Sanders
appeared to have copiously made use of another book that had been written
some 25 years earlier - Inside Boss.

Soldier Blue
- Paul Williams
Sometimes you can't choose your own battles. Paul Williams' superbly
written memoir of coming of age in Rhodesia explores his experiences
as a young conscript caught up in the bush war of the late 1970s. This
is a compelling, touching and often humorous account of growing up in
Rhodesia and the absurdity of fighting in a loosing war. The ugliness
of the conflict, the trauma of transformation, the agonies of conscience
of the writer, the beauty of the landscape: all are captured here in
brilliant detail. Threading through the narrative is the story of Williams'
obsessive infatuation with the enigmatic, sharp-tongued Bianca Pennefather,
who leads him on a painful emotional and spiritual journey. Looming over
this fragile world is the grotesque experience of the battlefield, where
young soldiers like Paul Williams inexorably shed their illusions and
lost their youth.

Once Upon
a White Man: A Memoir of War and Peace in Africa - Graham Atkins
A riveting memoir by Graham Atkins, this is a true account of an ordinary "white
man" born into Africa and living through extraordinary times. The author's
carefree lifestyle is replaced by the perils of face-to-face combat when
he becomes entangled in the frontline of Rhodesia's vicious 1970's bush
war. Wounded, he is airlifted to safety just as a deal is struck that
will end white rule in Rhodesia and give birth to Zimbabwe. However,
the new nation struggles to embrace democracy and before long Robert
Mugabe is dragging the place back into chaos. With his homeland again
in flames, Graham now races desperately to save his family from ruin.
This book provides a clear summary of Zimbabwe's history and intriguing
insights into the dilemma faced by white Africans trapped between political
extremes. An easy yet gripping read, it confirms that politics and violence
are never far beneath the surface in Africa.

Bound for
Africa: Cold War Fight along the Zambezi - Douglass H. Hubbard, Jr
This is the story of the author's introduction to Africa at a time when
much of the continent was in the grips of Cold War skirmishes between
the free world and the communist forces of China and the Soviet Union.
Frayed from three years of service during the Vietnam War, american Hubbard
traveled to Africa intending to become a rural policeman in a quiet area
of what was then Rhodesia. The counterinsurgency war flared soon after,
a conflict that bore many of the same characteristics of the country
he had just left. Hubbard describes his assimilation into the police
force and into Rhodesian society, and he recounts the challenges and
satisfaction of leading and training young Africans. This is a very personal
story of the frustrations he faced and of the attitudes and spirit of
the nation's racially mixed security force.

To the Bush
and Back: A Story about the last phase of the South African Border
War as experienced by a junior officer of 32 Battalion - Nico van
der Walt
Originally published in Afrikaans as 'Bos Toe!'. There was a time
when the world was still embroiled in the Cold War and when the communist
threat was a reality for many South Africans. That was a time when the
phrase "going-to-the-bush" had a meaning of its own and when many a South
African conscript was obliged to do his "tour" on the Namibian border.
This book tells the story about the bush; the war as well as the people.
It gives a personal account about a young man who reported for military
service with the South African Defence Force in the late 1980's and takes
the reader on a tour de force from Basic and Officers Training, all the
way to the bush of Namibia and Angola during the last battles of the
Border War - including the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale. It also details
the rigorous training; life in the Caprivi, as well as the constant operational
deployments. Lastly, the book describes the events directly after the
war and relates the history of a legendary unit and its people at the
time.

Buffalo Battalion:
South Africa's 32 Battalion - Louis Bothma
"...In this book we are not the heroes and the enemy the villains; but also not
vice versa. After all was said and done, 32 Battalion was not a beaten force
that capitulated to the enemy at the conclusion of a war. It was a unit that
was disbanded by the supreme high commander of the country's armed forces - the
political head of state, F.W. de Klerk . .....". It is the true story of white
and black soldiers - South Africans, South-Westers (Namibians), Angolans, Australians,
Britons, Rhodesians and others - who, through a combination of circumstances,
landed up in the same battalion where they had to fight secretly for South Africa
in a "terrorist war" beyond the country's borders. Written by a former 32 Battalion
Platoon Commander, the book deals with more than just shooting. It is about who
the men were, how they came to be together, what they learned from each other,
and what happened in the bush; their fears and expectations, their tears and
happiness, their camaraderie and loyalty towards one other.Originally published
in Afrikaans in 2006, reprinted 6 times (10,000 copies sold), this book has now
been up-dated, corrected, and reproduced as a English edition

How South
Africa Built Six Atom Bombs: And then Abandoned its Nuclear Weapons
Program - Al J Venter
This is a definitive account of how a maverick government was able to
secretly develop and test atom bombs. South Africa - then still dominated
by Pretoria's apartheid-orientated regime achieved that objective within
six years - or roughly half the time it took Pakistan to test its first
nuclear weapon. More salient, it did so with only a fraction of the number
of scientists, technicians and specialists involved in other nuclear
programs, such as those of India, Pakistan and North Korea: there were
never more than a half-dozen nuclear physicists involved in the actual
weaponization of the South African bombs.

Operation Miracle - Prop Geldenhuys
Operation Miracle, one of the last major operations during the
final stages of the Rhodesian bush war took place in Mozambique has a
fascinating story. From an Air Force perspective, the book is a sincere
tribute to three bold airmen, who were killed in action on 3 October
1979. They lie in unmarked graves, only God knows where. Two soldiers
were killed on Day 1 of Operation Miracle - their bodies were repatriated
and given decent burials. The aircrew - Hunter pilot Brian Gordon, and
Canberra crew Kevin Peinke and JJ Strydom (SAAF navigator on secondment)
were killed on Day 5, after most of the ground troops had withdrawn from
the battle field. Two months later, the ceasefire was declared, followed
four months later with a change of Government. This new government was
not interested in recovering the aircrew (bodies) who had paid the supreme
sacrifice in the defense of their country. Also, nobody knew exactly
where the two planes had crashed ...…

From Fledgling
to Eagle: The South African Air Force in the Border War - Brigadier-General
Dick Lord
The crucible of combat over 23 years forged the fledgling South African
Air Force into a formidable strike weapon, capable of defeating the best
Soviet air defences of the time. The book chronicles the evolution of
the SAAF in the `Border War' that raged in Angola and South West Africa
(Namibia), covering all the major South African Defence Force operations
between 1966 to 1989 . Dick Lord, who writes in a `from the cockpit'
style, has drawn on his own first-hand operational reports and diaries,
incorporating anecdotes from dozens of aviators from a wide variety of
squadrons - Buccaneers, Canberras, Mirages, Bosboks, C-160s and130s and
helicopters. He also expands on the close relationship the SAAF had with
the ground troops in a variety of operations- such units as the Parabats,
Recces and Koevoet.

Greater Share of Honour: The Memoirs of a Recce Officer - Jack Greef
A highly sought after scarce book now updated and reprinted !
As a young Staff Sergeant in South Africa's special forces 'The Recces',
Jack Greeff became one of the most decorated soldiers in the SADF. Leading
two-man reconnaissance patrols deep into enemy held territories and operating
under the noses of the enemy, they collected vital strategic information
on enemy movements and installations. Using the information gathered,
he led raiding parties to the targets to execute what were probably the
biggest and most daring acts of sabotage in recent military history.

Eagle Strike - Colonel Jan Breytenbach
This is not only an autobiography but also a comprehensive journal (640
pages) of one of the greatest airborne assaults ever mounted in Africa
- on a SWAPO fortified base containing its Military Headquarters, logistical
support, reserves and training facilities. Colonel Jan Breytenbach planned,
jumped in and led South African paratroopers into the Battle of Cassinga
in Angola with total commitment, superb strategy and leadership ability
that has made him legendary in military circles worldwide. The assault
was supported by a very strong airstrike by bombers and fighters as well
as by air transport to drop the paratroopers into battle 250 kms deep
behind enemy lines, and thus, of a necessity, the deployment of a veritable
swarm of helicopters to extract the paratroopers back to safety. This
work is destined to become a reference work by which future airborne
operations will be measured by.

Ongulumbashe: Where the Bushwar began - Paul Els
This eyewitness account is a must for the serious collector and researcher
of the revolutionary wars in Southern Africa. This book describes the
first clash that took place between elements of the South African police,
army and air force on the one side and Swapo's PLAN soldiers on the other
side. The book also describes how members of the Security Branch
of the SA Police infiltrated the area as employees of PASCO, ostensibly
a private company. All this action leads to the arrest and conviction
of several terrorists. This humble operation "Blouwildebeest" leads
to a bitter and sophisticated war in South Western Africa including Angola.
