Production of this major work was made possible through the
wholehearted co-operation recieved from the schools concerned,
and a few other contributions of special features. Each school
has its own chapter identified by a title page which features the
school crest. In addition to the twenty-three school histories,
prepared by the schools themselves, there are articles on the
Rhodesian Schools' Exploration Society, the Young Scientists'
Exhibitions and the Beit and Rhodes Trusts, the latter naming all
Rhodes Scholars from former Rhodesian schools. Also included are
an informative Introduction by Mr I.H. Grant, then Secretary for
Education (1979), and an historical survey by the late Mr. G.H.
Tanser, Chief Education Officer of the Ministry, 1958-1960,
entiled 'Foundations of the Educational System, 1892-1914'.
The book comprises 372 pages, is printed on best quality, heavy
matt art paper, and is in a large format of 30 x 21,5 cm (12"
x 8 ½"). The green cover is richly gold-blocked with the
title, and it has a complementary two-colour dust-jacket. It
includes over 500 photographs, and nearly 9 000 ex-students and
staff are named in the text, in captions, in end-of-chapter Rolls
of Honour (1914-1918, 1939-1945, and 1968-1979), and in lists of
School Heads, Head Boys and Girls, Captains of Games, Winners of
Scholarships and Bursaries, etc.
