The Rhodesia Regiment: From Pioneer Column to Independence 1890-1980 - Alexandre Binda
While this regiment might not seem quite so glamorous as the Rhodesian Light Infantry, the SAS or the Selous Scouts, the Rhodesia Regiment (for some time the Royal Rhodesia Regiment) has an important history going back to Rhodesian pioneer days. They distinguished themselves in the Matabele War, in the Matabele and Mashona Rebellions, in the Boer War, World War-I in German South West Africa, German East Africa, on the Western Front in France and in Salonika. In World War-II the regiment was broken up (because of the savages losses the Rhodesians suffered in World War-I) and elements fought in every theater against the Germans and Japanese. After the war the Rhodesia Regiment was reformed and by the time the Bush War came along there were eight comprised of territorial and National Service soldiers based in every major Rhodesian centre. While virtually unsung they gave the terrorist infiltrators far more than they could hand out. The book has many first hand accounts plus over 250 Contact Reports from the bush war period. The BSAP held the honour of occupying the Right of the Line - one of the finest police forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth. In 1889 Cecil Rhodes was granted a royal charter by Queen Victoria to settle Mashonaland, in what was to become Southern Rhodesia. So was formed the British South Africa Company; its regiment of troopers raised to protect the occupying Pioneer Column dubbed the British South Africa Police, the BSAP. This battalion also participated in South Africa's first major airborne operation in 1978 - 'Operation Reindeer' - the Battle of Cassinga, where they, together with other battalions attacked a large SWAPO base in Angola, successfully capturing it. Jake Harper-Ronald wanted to be a soldier from childhood. In 1966 his ambition was fulfilled when he was conscripted as a National Serviceman into the Royal Rhodesia Regiment. He afterwards moved to the UK and passed selection for the ultra tough Parachute Regiment - the famed Red Berets. Jake was the official photographer for Britain’s elite 1-Parachute Battalion when they deployed in Londonderry to combat an IRA-inspired ‘peace’ march. Shots were fired at the Paras who returned fire and killed 13 marchers - the infamous ‘Bloody Sunday’. He later joined the Rhodesian SAS and then moved to the Selous Scouts, taking part in daring cross-border raids into hostile territory with both units. After the Bush War he joined the Counter-Intelligence Division of Zimbabwe’s CIO and covertly spied for South African, US and British intelligence. He left the ZCIO to took up a British MI6 offer to run anti-Renamo Militias in Mozambique for them. He afterwards served two tours with a private military company in Iraq.

Of Land And Spirit - Alan Thrush
This novel is set during the five years of Rhodesian bush war leading up to the birth of Zimbabwe. Although fictional, it was written by an officer in the Rhodesian African Rifles who saw service in all operational areas and was decorated for gallantry.
The result is that there is much authenticity in it. Both sides involved in the bush war are catered for.

About 17 years ago the authors, Mitch Stirling and John House started collecting photographs and stories about aviation in the old days in Central Africa - Northern Rhodesia / Zambia; Southern Rhodesia / Zimbabwe and Nyasaland / Malawi. The result is ‘They Served Africa with Wings’, an excellent well produced book - a must for ex-pat aviation enthusiasts. The title is a play on the words ‘We serve Africa with Wings’ which was the motto of Central African Airways. The end result is a excellent evocative and well researched & illustrated 277 page +/- 'A4' sized publication, dedicated to all those fine men and women who served, so well, the cause of aviation between 1920 and 1980. An excellent must-have hardback history of aviation in Central Africa.

‘Lost in Africa’ is a colloquialism from the Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI), meaning ‘a state of bewilderment or cluelessness’, which Stu Taylor uses to describe his disjointed life.
Raised in Southern Rhodesia to nomadic parents, Taylor’s early years were unsettled as he was shuffled from school to school during the 1950s.
